The NATIVE Framework
A model for maintaining human cognitive autonomy alongside intelligent systems.
The NATIVE Framework is a cognitive model developed by cogNATIVE to help people maintain clear thinking, judgment, and autonomy when interacting with intelligent technologies.
As AI systems become embedded in everyday tools—chatbots, applications, automation platforms, and increasingly robots and autonomous systems—humans are often asked to interpret, trust, and act on machine outputs. Without intentional habits, it becomes easy to defer too much thinking to the system itself.
The NATIVE Framework provides a simple set of mental checkpoints that help individuals stay cognitively engaged when working with technology. It encourages users to remain aware of how systems influence decisions, verify outputs, and maintain active human judgment rather than passive reliance.
Because these principles focus on human cognition—not any specific technology—the framework applies across domains:
AI assistants, enterprise software, automation tools, robotics, and future intelligent systems.
At its core, NATIVE is about maximizing native human cognition in environments increasingly shaped by intelligent systems.
N
Notice
Understand the system.
Function: Identify the system you are interacting with and understand its intended purpose, capabilities, and limitations.
Operational Objective: Establish a basic mental model of the system before relying on it—clarifying what it is designed to do, where it performs well, and where errors or uncertainty may occur.
A
Attempt
Engage your own thinking first.
Function: Activate endogenous reasoning before delegating to technology.
Operational Objective: Attempt the task independently first—generating ideas, structure, or reasoning—to prevent immediate cognitive substitution by automated systems.
T
Tailor
Guide the system intentionally.
Function: Shape system interaction to support human goals rather than replace human thinking.
Operational Objective: Design system inputs intentionally—clarifying goals, constraints, and context so the system supports rather than overrides human reasoning.
I
Interrogate
Challenge the output.
Function: Challenge outputs for weaknesses, assumptions, and hidden bias.
Operational Objective: Introduce counterfactuals, request evidence, and probe assumptions to surface weaknesses in system outputs.
V
Verify
Confirm critical claims.
Function: Confirm factual claims or high-stakes outputs through independent sources.
Operational Objective: Cross-check sources, validate claims, and calibrate confidence before decision commitment.
E
Execute
Retain Human Authority
Function: Preserve human accountability and authorship.
Operational Objective: Maintain human ownership of the final judgment and decision outcome.
The future of human autonomy starts here.
